Pingouin Car Rental Review - Mauritius Self-Drive Roadtrip

The Website and Booking Process

The website of Pingouin Car Rental is clearly structured, which is perfect for getting an overview of all the vehicles available. All prices are transparently listed and very reasonable. You can book directly through the website, or alternatively request a quote.

The Pick-up

We picked up our vehicle directly at SSR International Airport. This is by far the most convenient option as you’ll only have to walk a few meters from the arrivals hall to arrive at the rental desk. 

The Instructions

The entire process of getting to know the car, checking for damages, and reading through the paperwork took a bit more than one hour. This was mostly due to someone picking up a car ahead of us, and only one person was working at the desk. As soon as it was our turn, everything proceeded swiftly.

The Car

We picked a Toyota Hilux. This car is the largest vehicle on offer. Compared to many other destinations, a 4x4 is rarely necessary in Mauritius. However, the higher ground clearance can be useful on some of the more remote trails. The car was far from new but in very good condition. The air con was working perfectly. The car was spacious and would also work for a family of 4. 

Communications during the Trip

Similar to the booking process, most of the communication runs through WhatsApp. We never had any reason to contact Pingouin Car Rental during the trip, though.

Our trip

The Drop-off

Once we had concluded our roadtrip, we returned the vehicle to SSR International Airport again. The drop-off process was very smooth. The only thing we struggled with was finding the right parking lot to leave the car.  

Problems

We did not have any issues. The car ran the entire time perfectly. 

Summary

For us, Pingouin Car Rental was an excellent choice for our Mauritius roadtrip. Both pick-up and drop-off at the airport were highly convenient, and the staff were very friendly.
